Just like Batch 6 there are some big stones in this batch too – also collected from the Rowallan Burn where it comes out on the beach. Most of the time the stones here are HUGE but every now and again, especially after a lot of rain, there’s quite a few smaller stones. They aren’t ever as smooth as the Gemstone Beach stones, but they are just as colourful as those ones.
Stage 1: 80/100grit – 3lb Tumbler 2
Number of stones: 24
Weight in: 975g. 4 Tbspns of 80/100 grit – no pellets added. 12 days tumbling. Lost 151g.
Eeek – I didn’t mean to but I left the stones in a 6 day soap tumble after the 80/100grit tumble (must have gotten really busy!)
Stage 2: 220grit
Weight in: 823g. 4 Tbspns of 220grit – I added pellets again this time since there were some bigger stones in this lot like Batch 6. I also wanted to see if the pellets helped with the pitting and chipping that I’ve been noticing in the last few batches. 10 days tumbling. Lost 83g.
Stage 3: 400grit
Weight in: 858g (+ 118g) I added 5 more stones to this Stage. Lost 83g. A little bit of chipping is still happening. Also did a 24 hour soap tumble before combining this batch with Batch 6 into the 4lb tumbler for polishing and borax.
I also removed 5 stones from this batch as I think they really need a redo at 220grit.
I’m also noticing that the loss of weight is pretty consistent throughout each stage. That’s really interesting.
