Nestled along the rugged coastline of Western Southland, New Zealand, lies Gemstone Beach, a haven for rockhounds and rock tumblers alike. Visitors eagerly scour the shores hoping to unearth a treasure trove of semi-precious gems. The relentless surf has tumbled and polished these natural wonders, transforming them into exquisite specimens that captivate the eye with their brilliance and diversity.
Gemstone Beach’s rich geological history has played a crucial role in shaping its unique collection of stones. In Jocelyn Thornton words “Finding beautiful, durable and rare stones in New Zealand is a matter of knowing where they lie among the predominant greywacke boulders.” The beach itself is a result of the Waimeamea River’s erosive forces, carrying these precious stones from the surrounding hills and depositing them along the shoreline.
Unveiling the Hidden Gems
The most common gemstones found at Gemstone Beach are quartz (quartzite), jasper, and garnet. Quartz, the most abundant mineral on Earth, appears in a variety of colours, including milky white, clear, and rose-coloured. Jasper, a type of chalcedony, displays a vibrant array of colours, from deep reds and greens to warm yellows and browns. Garnet, a silicate mineral, showcases its hardness and diverse array of colours.
Gemstone Beach also holds rarer gems that add to its mystique. Grossular is a calcium-rich garnet. Small quantities of the translucent green variety of hydrogrossular garnet can be found. A type of jade called Nephrite is occasionally discovered among the treasures of Gemstone Beach. Rumours swirl of the elusive sapphire, a highly prized gem known for its intense blue hue, being found at this beach too. However, I’ve not found this rare and sought-after treasure yet!
