When you have to go to Invercargill on a Friday morning for an appointment it would be rude not to call into Gemstone Beach on the way back home for a little fossick right?
To give you an idea of how much I love fossicking at Gemstone Beach, I’d forgotten to put my thermal gumboots and socks in the car before leaving home. However I did not let that stop me! A quick stop at Riverton Hammer Hardware saw me the proud owner of a pair of Red Bands and 3 pairs of thermal socks!
As I pulled into the carpark a familiar little red car greeted me. I knew at some stage I was going to bump into JP and that’s exactly what happened. Just as I almost reached the bank of the Waimeamea River JP was making his way back to the carpark. He joined me as I finished my fossick at the river mouth and was great company all the way back to the carpark.
This particular section of Gemstone Beach is fast becoming my favourite – especially as the low tide begins to turn.
I’m sure I’ve become a little more particular in my rockhounding since hanging out with JP. As I’ve mentioned before, I do like to let my stones sit for a day or two. Then I sorting through them again after wetting with the garden hose.
You can see what a difference that makes to stone numbers in the image to the right! The really good thing about putting stones not being polished into my garden pots is that if I change my mind they are still there! I do love how the rain (and it does rain a bit down here in Western Southland) constantly shows of the pretty colours of the stones that did originally catch my eye (cos I picked them up!) They just haven’t made it into the tumbling barrels!
Best thing about bumping into JP, we’ve planned to fossick again tomorrow! It will be our last fossick together for a while though as JP is returning home in a couple of days.
